Drew Brown asked:

There are a lot of people out there that will know the feeling of drinking a glass of wine or beer and at the same time thinking “What if I could make a nice drink like this myself?”. If your next thought was that you could be saving some money then your mind could not be more right. Most people quickly forget that because they think it is hard to make your own wine and beer, years ago that was true but nowadays that is no longer the case then anyone can buy a beer or wine kit that you use at home, which is all you need to get ready and create your next glass of beer or wine at home.

Beer or wine kit at home, the pros

For first time users such a kit is perfect and makes it really easy. There is, almost, no exception, anyone can make beer or wine with one of these kits then they have everything you need, all the ingredients are there and of course, the much needed instructions. Before you know it you will be creating your own beer and wine of high quality without breaking a real sweat thinking about the fact that this is the first time you undertake such an effort.

One of the other big pros of making your own wine or beer is the matter of the costs you will have. If you calculate the costs and look at the bottom line you will see that it is a lot cheaper to brew your own then to buy at the store.

The last advantage I would like to mention here is that when you see how easy it is to use a home kit you may as well start to see the beginning of a new hobby that could become a very lucrative one. Once you start to get the hang of it and hear from friends and relatives that your home brewing is really tasting great then you might even start to consider starting a micro-home-business and start complementing your income with some extra cash.

Beer or wine kit at home, the cons

If there are pros then it is almost inevitable that there are cons and one of the major ones is that if you only use a beer or wine kit at home you may never learn the traditional way of doing these things. And if you want to start your own business you may need to learn the traditional ways so you can create your own brand. One of the other cons is that when you stick to the wine and beer kits you can only use the variations that the kit supplier gives you.

So looking at the pros and cons of using such a beer or wine kit at home the conclusion should be that if you ever have the thought of creating the next glass of wine or beer all by yourself that you should use such a kit. If only to show that you can really create it at home. If you start to use the kits more and more then you might consider picking up a few books and looking at some web sites to start doing it with the raw ingredients and start making your own flavors.

ESTER

Nisha Garg asked:

The functionality of a mobile phone depends on the software installed in it. A common mobile phone can not perform beyond the range of this particular mobile software that is embedded in it at the time of manufacturing. Usually these softwares are designed and developed by the manufacturing companies which is distinct for various models. But the latest mobile phones whose operating systems are quite sophisticated, they support the installation of third party softwares. It is just like computer which can perform some basic functions but in order to enjoy some additional functionality, other third-party softwares are installed. Generally, the software developed for one model of a mobile phone does not work on the other but the developers who develop these mobile softwares make minute changes in the software so that they can run on the other models too. Also different companies may have their mobile phones based on different technology and software, therefore one particular software has to be developed to fulfill various requirements of the user. Like,if one model of mobile phone can run java software on it, but the other is based on Symbian technology. Consequently the company will have to develop their own software for both the platforms. In order to access all the functionality of his handset, he needs a particular format which is called BREW. The development process of this format is basically modified by the mobile vendors as it allows the accessibility of all the functionality of their handsets. It is freely available but in order to run these handsets a digital signature is needed which can be acquired through the tools used in manufacturing these mobiles. This free kit is known as BREW SDK (Software Development Kits). the software is tested by the Qualcomm (developers of BREW) with the help of their TRUE BREW testing software in order to use these softwares in general phones. A wide range of softwares available for any kind of mobile handset. There are many free mobile softwares available in the market others will have to be bought to use them. There are softwares available for every type of mobile users. For those who wants to be in touch with internet there are browsers available for it. There are a lot of games available which keeps you miles away from getting bored. Softwares like Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office which helps the business professionals and students through document viewers and editors to use the documents. Artists and designers can use image viewers and editors. And some softwares are simply developed to be used for fun. Mobile Games have the largest share in the softwares that are developed for the mobile phones. Mobile games are developed using technologies and platforms such as Windows Mobile, Symbian OS, Palm OS, Macromedia’s Flash Lite, Sun’s J2ME (Java 2 Micro Edition, recently re named simply “Java ME”), Qualcomm’s BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless). Some other platforms are also available, but they are not so common. Initially Java was the most common platform for mobile games; however the performance limitations of Java has led to the adoption of various native binary formats for more skeptical games.

NOE

LACIE

Steve A asked:

If you’ve ever been to Texas, you may have noticed a peculiar beverage for sale called St. Arnold’s Beer.

It comes in a distinct bottle, with a picture of St. Arnold himself (the patron saint of brewing) right on the label, and it happens to be the most successful micro brewery company in Houston.

But St. Arnold’s was not always the profitable small business startup that it is today. In fact, their 13 year history is full of false starts, missed opportunities, and near failures.

I recently had the opportunity to meet Brock Wagner, the founder of St. Arnold’s, and his story had a profound effect on me. It all started back in 1994, when Brock had an important realization: time was running out.

At the time, Brock was working in the financial services industry making a good salary, but when his father unexpectedly passed away, it gave Brock a chance to reflect. He realized that time was limited, and that he didn’t want to spend the rest of his life at a job he didn’t love.

He sat down one day and made a list of what he loved. Near the top were two items: drinking beer, and making beer.

To the average person, these may have seemed like poor opportunities for a career change. After all, his entire background was in financial services. What was he going to do, go drive a delivery truck for Budweiser?

But Brock decided to just follow his heart, and set about getting financing to create Houston’s first micro-brewery.

From the beginning there were problems with his small business startup idea. Money was scarce for such a risky venture. Investors were reluctant to put their hard earned dollars into a business where the founder had no beverage industry experience. But after more than a year, Brock had secured barely enough to get started (one of his early investors was Kenneth Lay of Enron, which is an entire other story).

Several years into the project, Brock had secured a facility, constructed all the brewery equipment, and was ready to start making beer! But about a week before he was ready to launch, there was another major setback: a city inspector who had been testing the pipelines made a mistake with a pressure valve, and ended up destroying $100,000 worth of brewery equipment, in just 30 seconds!

What a blow, and just a week before they were set to launch. The next few years were spent in various courtrooms before being reimbursed by the city, but Brock was not deterred. He raised more money, rebuilt the facility, six months later finally shipped his first bottle of St. Arnold’s beer.

It should have been a time to celebrate, but initial sales of the product were disappointing. In fact, five years after shipping their first bottle of beer, St. Arnold’s had yet to turn a profit. How easy would it have been to pack things up and go home? Even the most die hard entrepreneur would have admit defeat after five years right? Maybe Houston wasn’t ready for it’s own micro-brewery.

It was at this time that Brock’s business partner decided to back out of the company. Brock bought out his shares (generously ensuring that he would at least recover his initial investment, even though the company was losing money) and they parted on good terms.

This was the lowest point for St. Arnold’s, and for Brock. With a struggling business, and very few customers, it was difficult to stay optimistic. But over the next five years, Brock was able to slowly but surely turn the company around. Today St. Arnold’s is not only profitable, but it is admired and loved as a Houston tradition. People ask for the product if a particular bar or restaurant doesn’t carry it, and the brewery holds a tour every Saturday that is open to the public. Houston and St. Arnold’s have become synonymous, and it is all due to Brock’s refusal to accept defeat.

As entrepreneur’s we can learn a lot from Brock’s story, as we attempt our own small business startup.

First, never, ever, ever give up. I have yet to hear a single story of a successful small business startup that didn’t face setback after setback. It took Brock a year to raise enough money. Most people would have quit after a few months of failed meetings. The week before his launch all his equipment was destroyed in a freak accident (at a cost of $100,000). Most people would have given up then, after such bad luck. And finally, after five years of losing money, Brock continued to persist, after nearly everyone would have admitted defeat.

Second, I think it’s safe to say that the only reason Brock succeeded is that he loved what he was doing. If he had to face all those setbacks and he didn’t even like making beer, he surely wouldn’t have been successful. Loving your job and company is a prerequisite for success in any small business startup, because even if things look bleak, at least you are doing what you love.

The challenge for us all is to find our own St. Arnold’s Brewery…a business we love. And to spend as long as it takes to make it successful, no matter what setbacks we may encounter.

DORIA

michael Webster asked:

Food, Wine, Cocktails, Beer and Fun what else is there? That’s how many relate to the Ocean Brewing Company restaurant/pub it is a casual local dining establishment featuring friendly service, attentive and super knowlege of the menu by our pleasant waiter, Julio. They have high-quality, moderately priced food, and a distinctive selection of micro brewed specialty beer and enhanced by an extensive wine list featuring great imported Italian, California, and other European wines served in a comfortable and entertaining atmosphere.

The Ocean Brewing Company is one of Laguna Beach’s favorite gathering place for fun featuring over 30 hand crafted beers and other beverages in a state-of-the-art micro brewery. Get there early, before 9:00 pm for the best seats, any day of the week before the entertainment starts and young crowds gather. Many tourist and locals alike consider the place to be their neighborhood Italian Restaurant pub featuring home baked bread, hand stretched pizzas and traditional Italian food made from scratch. The Ocean Brewing Company restaurant/pub Serves authentic, Italian cuisine in a non-contemporary setting. The menu features traditional items such as pizza, pasta and a great selection of appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches and for the more serious connoisseur they have main dinner entrees and specials. People watching, sidewalk patio dining is also available.

After 9:00 PM nightly live entertainment prevails. According to head bartender Giovanni, who loves dazzling the crowd with specialty drinks. Choose from a full array of luscious concoctions, or ask the bar-keep to surprise you with something new. Their soon to be famous, “dirty martini”, will wake up your taste buds with a zesty dash of vinegar.

For dinner hours, come discover the premium quality Grilled Flat Iron Steak chief Aurelio creates, which I had and found it very tasty. Or try what Peggy had the Wild Coho Salmon griddle seared and served over a curried risotto. For after hours quick and good food they provide great sandwiches which include choice of soup, house salad or shoestring potatoes. But for their best effort you should try one of their many delightful handmade pizza’s that they are best know for and don’t forget their pasta. Many of their entrees and signature side dishes are enhanced by full flavor rubs and marinades. Current owner and operator Robin Chang acquired the establishment just recently from former owner Jonathan Thomas, who had a run in with city hall, who claimed that he was in violation of his city permit and that the loud music being played for the dancing club patrons was disturbing residents. It was pointed out at the hearings to the commissioners that other Laguna Beach clubs made just as much noise and they do have near by residents but the brewery is located in a commercial zone and no residents are close by. Since the new owner has taken over things seem to be much better and the city planning commission’s 6 month reprieve is nearly up and it looks like the new management is complying and cooler heads are prevailing. Many locals do patronize the brewery and would **** to see any major changes. Sally Walker a 28 year old Lagunan said,” my friends and I have been coming here and enjoying Ocean Avenue “pub” and we hope it will remain as it is”. Michael Harvey 33 another local says,” we like things as they are. We think it is better for locals to party here at home in Laguna than risking the dangerous drives by having to travel out of town. Most of my friend feel much safer right here at home.”

ROSS
